A three goal first half by the Chicago Fire sparked the visiting team to a 3-2 victory over the struggling LA Galaxy on Sunday night. It was the highest number of goals the Fire have scored all season. Recent designated player signing Freddie Ljungberg replaced Marco Pappa in the 57th minute, but didn’t make much [...]

Real Salt Lake extended their win streak Saturday to a franchise-best five games after dispatching the Kansas City Wizards 4-1 in a hotly contested affair. While RSL jumped off to an early lead after a pair of goals by Fabian Espíndola and Álvaro Saborío, the Wizards were able to capitalize on RSL’s occasional sloppy play [...]

Real Salt Lake played host to the Houston Dynamo Thursday night in MLS’ marquee midweek match-up on ESPN2 and came away deserved 3-1 winners. The victory brings RSL even on points with the South Texas side in the Western Conference standings. The previous night at a sparsely-populated Red Bull Arena, a two-goal performance by John Wolyniec keyed a 3-0 New York Red Bulls win over the sparsely-populated New England Revolution in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match.

Saturday smack-down day in MLS

By ASN Staff • May 9th, 2010 • Category: MLS News

It was a Saturday of spankings in Major League Soccer. Four of the seven matches were decided by three goals or more, as teams from New York, Philadelphia and Seattle turned in lackluster (or worse) performances. The LA Galaxy continued their dominance in the latest sign that maybe, just maybe, MLS’ culture of parity is coming undone a bit. Or not, judging by events in Toronto and Columbus.

A busy Week 6 in MLS: Full recap of (nearly) all games

In the nation’s capital, DC United lost its plot in the second half of a steamy encounter (over 90 degrees at kickoff) with the New York Red Bulls, succumbing 2-0. For New York it was the first victory at RFK Stadium in nearly five years, which was of particular satisfaction to veteran defender Mike Petke. But the most noise was made once again by Edson Buddle.

RSL receive championship rings, rally for draw with Sounders

By Patrick McShane • Apr 11th, 2010 • Category: Features

It was a night of celebration, disappointment, and ultimately mild satisfaction Saturday as Real Salt Lake fought back twice to rescue a 2-2 draw against the Seattle Sounders. It was the first time that RSL played in front of their home fans since winning the MLS Cup last season. The 19,970 fans who came to celebrate were treated to a spectacle, though sadly not three points from a home win.

By Patrick McShane • Nov 1st, 2009 • Category: MLS News

It wasn’t the prettiest match either team has played this season, but Real Salt Lake stole a late goal Saturday afternoon to claim a 1-0 victory over a defensive-minded Columbus Crew squad. RSL strikers Yura Movsisyan and Robbie Findley combined for a brilliant winner to claim a one-goal advantage before Thursday’s return leg. Be sure to check out the photo gallery.

Chicago Fire torch RSL playoff hopes in 1-1 draw at Rio Tinto

By Patrick McShane • Sep 13th, 2009 • Category: MLS News

Real Salt Lake’s 2009 playoff hopes were dealt a crushing blow Saturday as the Chicago Fire stole a point in a 1-1 draw. A quality goal from forward Chris Rolfe gave the visitors the lead going into half, but RSL defender Jamison Olave came to the rescue in the 72nd minute and secured the home draw. With the draw Chicago continued their stellar road form this season, leading the league with a 6-2-5 record away from Toyota Park.

U.S. wills itself to victory over El Salvador

By Patrick McShane • Sep 6th, 2009 • Category: National Teams News

After conceding an early goal to El Salvador, the U.S. Men’s National Team fought back for two quick strikes (one by this guy) before halftime and held on in the second half to get the three points it needed from the World Cup Qualifier at Sandy, Utah’s Rio Tinto Stadium. But the win was far from impressive and leaves many unanswered questions ahead of the stretch run in the Hex. USMNT player assessments in match report. Separate photo gallery here.
