Weekend MLS wrap: Frustration in Seattle, heartbreak in Philly, boredom in N.Y.

By ASN Staff • Jul 12th, 2010 • Category: MLS News

On the last weekend of World Cup action, Major League Soccer had a full schedule of games on tap. There were several results of importance, perhaps none bigger than the Landon Donovan-less LA Galaxy loss at the New England Revolution. In Seattle, the young Sounders provided a spark but it was 19-year-old Miguel Montano’s red [...]

A busy Week 6 in MLS: Full recap of (nearly) all games

In the nation’s capital, DC United lost its plot in the second half of a steamy encounter (over 90 degrees at kickoff) with the New York Red Bulls, succumbing 2-0. For New York it was the first victory at RFK Stadium in nearly five years, which was of particular satisfaction to veteran defender Mike Petke. But the most noise was made once again by Edson Buddle.

Heroics by Fucito, Keller carry Sounders to late victory over K.C.

After letting a win slip away by giving up a last-second goal last week, the Sounders turned around and scored one of their own Saturday night at Qwest Field. The heroics of Kasey Keller, a veteran of hundreds (or more?) of professional matches, and Michael Fucito, playing in his second, brought the Sounders their last-minute win over the Kansas City Wizards.

Schmid dissatisfied with Sounders victory

The Seattle Sounders controlled the run of play, had the most dangerous chances and never looked to be in much danger of dropping points in Thursday night’s First Kick opener against the Philadelphia Union. It wasn’t good enough for their head coach. “We can play much better soccer than we did tonight,” said Sigi Schmid. Listen to his comments in their entirety here. But Schmid’s comments were tame compared to what the losing coach had to say.

The Sounders have officially signed Swiss international forward Blaise Nkufo, and his addition is the final piece to Seattle’s roster puzzle. Playoff soccer, MLS style

In a match that featured intense physical play (Nate Jaqua, left, literally bled through all his game jerseys), defensive dominance, atrocious refereeing and a near-brawl, the Seattle Sounders drew 0-0 with the Houston Dynamo on Thursday night at Qwest Field. Seattle defender Patrick Ianni, a last-minute replacement in the starting lineup, came closest to scoring by hitting the crossbar late in the first half.

An 86th minute goal by Roger Levesque decided the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championship, as the Seattle Sounders held on to beat DC United 2-1 in the final match at RFK Stadium Wednesday night. It is the first trophy for the expansion franchise and sends them to next year’s CONCACAF Champions League. But Sounders players and fans won’t be thinking about next year for a while. They’ll be enjoying the biggest win for any Seattle sports franchise in recent memory.
