After several weeks of negotiations with a potential new ownership group fell through at the last minute, Women’s Professional Soccer discontinued operations of the Los Angeles Sol on Thursday. The rights to the 19 players currently held by the Sol will be dispersed during a special draft for the league’s eight franchises on Thursday, February 4 and will be announced later that day

Donovan has tasted the Toffee, so don’t expect him back

By Breton Bonnette • Jan 28th, 2010 • Category: Features

As cash-strapped as Everton may be, it’s pretty clear Landon Donovan has been making an impression on the Merseyside squad and its supporters. Donovan nabbed his first goal yesterday vs. Sunderland and possibly push further ahead the brewing intentions of the Everton front office to keep him at Goodison Park permanently. What will that mean for the Galaxy?

How MLS expansion sides have fared through the years…

By Breton Bonnette • Jan 25th, 2010 • Category: Features

Unfortunately for Philadelphia Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz, history does not portend wide-ranging success for his club in 2010. The Sol also rises

The winds of change are gusting for the Los Angeles Sol. The team is being sold by Anschutz Entertainment Group, which also operates the Galaxy, to a group of local investors. The pending sale, which the league says could be done by the coming week, comes as no surprise. The Sol reportedly lost around $2 million last year and AEG had always said that their involvement with the Sol and WPS was temporary. While it is unsettling for the league, the Sol and its fans, these changes could serve the team very well in the long run.

The Philadelphia Union were already set at goalkeeper and defense coming into Major League Soccer’s SuperDraft and had one perfectly serviceable striker in Alejandro Moreno. By ASN Staff • Dec 4th, 2009 • Category: Features, National Teams News

The U.S. Men’s National Team was placed in Group C with England, Algeria and Slovenia in today’s World Cup draw in Capetown, South Africa. The allocation is a fortunate one for the Yanks, who face quite possibly the easiest of the eight groups. Pressure will be on Bob Bradley’s side to advance to the elimination round–perhaps even as group winners.
