Days after the New York Red Bulls agreed to sell Jozy Altidore to Villareal, the Red Bulls’ defacto home grounds was the scene of an international friendly between the U.S. and Argentina. The friendly was well-attended and entertaining but ended in a scoreless draw.

Altidore’s first season in Spain has been one to forget. After some encouraging performances as a substitute, he was relegated to the reserves team and ultimately sent to Xerex on loan in January. Unfortunately, he was not put to use there either. This calendar year, the only games he has started have been for the U.S. national squad. He scored in the Yanks’ comeback against El Salvador (as a sub) on the second matchday of Hex qualifying and netted a hat trick in the 3-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago April 1.

As for the USMNT, it has had some mixed results in the past year. It got through the first stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying without really breaking a sweat, dominated Sweden in a friendly and beat archrivals Mexico in the first round of Hex qualifying. But the more recent results have been less promising. The loss at Costa Rica, though not entirely unexpected, was a major disappointment and the team struggled to defeat Honduras at Chicago’s Soldier Field over the weekend.
