Just for fun: Our MLS Twitter account standings
By ASN Staff • Dec 2nd, 2009 • Category: Contests & CompetitionsAs you may know, American Soccer News has dedicated Twitter accounts for each of the 16 Major League Soccer teams. Some are more active than others, for various reasons. Some also have a much better following than others. Take a look at the standings (as of 8:30pm EST, Dec. 2):
1. LA Galaxy (730 followers)
2. Seattle Sounders FC (508)
3. New York Red Bulls (353)
4. Chicago Fire (313)
5. Houston Dynamo (293)
6. Chivas USA (263)
7. Toronto FC (262)
8. New England Revolution (246)
9. DC United (237)
10. Real Salt Lake (230)
11. San Jose Earthquakes (203)
12. FC Dallas (199)
13. Columbus Crew (191)
14. Kansas City Wizards (129)
15. Colorado Rapids (123)
16. Philadelphia Union (94)
Obviously, this table is not a reflection of each team’s support as there are many variables that affect how many people follow a given account. For example, the Philadelphia Union account is less than a month old. Seattle’s account benefited from a certain “The Price is Right” host (and Sounders fan) retweeting one of its missives. A tweet from the New York Red Bulls’ account was recently retweeted by one of its former players who currently plies his trade in the U.K. Not to mention that a few teams have dedicated “Twitterers” while others have beat reporters who livetweet games from the pressbox, which equate to more visibility and hence more followers.
Still it’s a fun little exercise. Maybe we’ll follow it up next week to see how things have changed. Maybe we’ll even figure out a way to reward the team that has the most followers by a certain set point in the future. By First Kick 2010, say. If somebody has any ideas for a prize or friendly wager please post it via comment in the field below.
