Sigi Schmid

The Columbus Crew announced Sigi Schmid would not return as head coach for the 2009 season (ASN, Dec. 10, 2008).

Schmid was hired as the Seattle Sounders head coach just one week later, the first of many right moves made by the expansion club. The Crew hired Robert Warzycha to replace Schmid. After a slow start to the season, the defending MLS Cup champs got on track and repeated as Supporters Shield winners. Their postseason success would not be duplicated however, as they were upset in the Eastern Conference semifinals by eventual MLS Cup champion Real Salt Lake.
